List of Pus, Acid, and Mucus Forming Foods

What foods are pus, mucus, and acid-forming? In the Mucusless Diet Healing System, Prof. Arnold Ehret asserts that pus and mucus-forming foods are the foundation of human illness and should not be eaten. In short, pus and mucus-forming foods include meat, poultry, dairy, grains, starches, and fats. Yet, it must be understood that just knowing what these foods are is not enough. It is important to know how to rationally and safety TRANSITION off of the most dangerous pus and mucus-formers over a longer period of time.

The word “mucus” is from the Latin mucus which means “slime, mold, snot, etc.” Mucus refers to a thick, viscous, slippery discharge that is comprised of dead cells, mucin, inorganic salts, water, and exfoliated cells. It also refers to the slimy, sticky, viscous substance left behind by mucus-forming foods in the body after ingestion. The word “pus” is from late 14c. Latin “pus” (related to puter [putrid] “rotten”), from Proto-Indo-European*pu- compared to Sanskrit. puyati “rots, stinks,” putih “stinking, foul.” Pus often refers to a thick white, yellowish, or greenish opaque liquid produced in infected tissue, consisting of dead white blood cells, bacteria, tissue debris, and serum. It also refers to the substance that dead animal flesh is chemically changed to after being consumed or while rotting in one’s digestive tract. The ingestion of meat and dairy products create pus residue in the body, while starchy and fatty foods are mucus-forming.

The word “mucusless,” or mucus-free, refers to foods that are not mucus-forming. Such foods digest without leaving behind a thick, viscous, slimy substance called mucus. These foods include all kinds of fat-free, and starchless, fruits and vegetables.

All foods that are pus/mucus-forming are acid-forming. The word “acid” is from the early 1600s meaning “of the taste of vinegar,” from French acide (16c.) or directly from Latin acidus “sour, sharp,” adjective of state from acere “to be sour,” from PIE root *ak- “sharp, pointed.” In chemistry it refers to a class of substances whose aqueous solutions are characterized by a sour taste, the ability to turn blue litmus red, and the ability to react with bases and certain metals to form salts. From a mucusless perspective, pus and mucus-forming foods are understood to be “acid-forming” inside the human body. Such foods create an acidic internal environment that is detrimental to wellness.

In November 2014, we released the first revised and annotated edition of Arnold Ehret’s Mucusless Diet Healing System. The following is a list of pus, mucus, and acid-forming foods is similar to the one in this new reference edition of the Mucusless Diet. This is not an exhaustive list, but the most common acid-forming foods.

It must be emphasized that not all of these foods are forbidden on the Mucusless Diet Healing System. Ehret’s “TRANSITION DIET” will show you how to use less harmful mucus-forming foods to get off of the worst ones gradually.

Pus and Very Mucus-forming foods should be avoided from the beginning if possible. But Moderately or Slightly mucus-forming items may be used effectively during the transition. See the TRANSITION DIET section of the Mucusless Diet or Spira Speaks for more details:

What are Deceptive Mucus-Formers?

Here is a list of foods that many people do not realize create mucus:

  • Rice (great for creating glue to bind books, bad for the transition to a mucus-free diet)
  • Avocados (fatty item that may be used on the transition, but are highly addictive. Although technically a fruit, if used it is best to combine them with a mucus-free combination salad or vegetables to aid elimination. However, it is recommended to stay away from them if you are not already stuck to them.)
  • Nuts (Mucus-forming, but may be used on the transition. It is best to eat with dried fruits like raisins to aid with elimination.)
  • Plantains (Starchy)
  • Tofu (Slimy and mucus-forming.)
  • Un-ripened fruits like green bananas (the riper the fruit you eat the better).
  • Corn (It does not eliminate well. When cooked, corn becomes mushy and slimy in the intestines.)
  • Corn chips (Some people use them on the transition, but they are very addictive and do not eliminate well)
  • Beans (They are starchy and mucus-forming. But, they may be used sparingly on the transition within close proximity to green-leafy salads)
  • Starchy Vegetables (Some vegetalbes are starchy and mucus-forming in raw or cooked forms, such as white potatoes. But, many other vegetables, such as sweet potatoes, become almost mucus-free (starchless) after proper cooking.

The Transition Diet

It is very important that people learn how to transition from the most harmful mucus-forming foods to the ones that leave behind the least amount of waste. To learn more about this transitional process, check out the TRANSITION DIET section of the Mucusless Diet Healing System.

  1. Gregg D Pyka says:

What’s amazing is everybody is different, I cut out all grains and dairy to start. Then I needed to remove Corn in all forms especially corn syrup, the crazy thing is I seem to be able to eat cane sugar with no problems. The same with meat, I can eat all the sardines and canned red salmon I want but pork is another story. I think I’m allergic to corn which is bad since I use world’s best cat litter which is 100% corn kernels, I could be breathing that in ?
I’ve just been up for 2 days now since everytime I lay down I feel like I’m going to choke and jump out of bed, all because I ate a 15 oz can of yams that had some corn syrup in it. I even strained and rinsed them and re sweetened them with Raw Honey. I need to figure this out since it’s been happening for the past 8 years or longer, cayenne was working but now I’m over 55 years old and it’s getting worse. A few months ago I beat my chest so hard with Bonger Balls trying to loosen up mucus I caused a bleed somewhere in my windpipe or throat etc. and nearly drowned in my own blood. 3-4 hours of hacking at the kitchen sink watching it turn from red to brown (clotting) to clear (clotted) my forehead hurt for 3 days afterwards. I live alone and almost passed out 3 times, that would have done it. So yea, time to get serious. I’m not complaining since I went to having this 90% of the time a few months ago to 30% since I haven’t identified all the main culprits, I thought cutting all grain and dairy would have done it but nooooooo LATER This site helped a lot =^..^= thanks

    • Spira says:

Eggplant is relatively mucus-free if it is not overcooked. But, I’d always eat it with a salad to help it digest and keep moving through the system.

        • Prof. Spira says:

The hybird theory of mucus-forming foods is highly problematic and generally wrong. Prof. Arnold Ehret did not submit a hybrid theory of mucus-forming foods, and has an entirely different conception of what is and is not mucus-forming to Sebi and others who developed their own hybrid theories, presumably in the 1980s & 90s.

  2. Plain Jane says:

You must eat raw all the time or either Just fruits and veggies. Your list is extreme. There is no way that some of the things Sebi pointed out as good to consume is mucus forming. Stop giving false information. That is why it’s eaten in moderation and why you should fas and detox the body. Don’t tell people or scare people to no consume. Smh

    • Prof. Spira says:

Arnold Ehret’s Mucusless Diet Healing System is not a “foods list diet.” You can’t practice the “system” by looking at a foods list. There is nothing black and white about practicing the system, when you are doing it properly.

Although Sebi was influenced by Prof. Arnold Ehret’s work to a certain extent, his overall opinions on what foods are and are not mucus-forming, or the importance of dietary transitional methods, fasting, and colon irrigation instead of relying heavily on using herbs, are very different.

It has proven to not be easy to combine and synthesize Ehret’s and Sebi’s philosophies and healing practices into one approach. I discuss this a bit more in the following video (46:12): https://youtu.be/T8iWyeDg4DA?t=46m12s. In general, we do not focus on what foods are and are not considered “hybrids,” but are most concerned with getting away from foods that leave behind slime. Ripe bananas, lemons, lightly steamed broccoli, and other foods we find to be non-mucus-forming will not leave behind slime inside the body. Any grain product will decay into a slimy mess, including quinoa, spelt, etc., although some are better than others to use for transitional purposes. This can be tested using one of several simple tests that Ehret elaborates on in the Mucusless Diet Healing System book.

To put it into perspective when I say “degrade into slime,” consider what a piece of white (or any kind of) bread left in water turns to. Or, if you cook rice too long. They both turn into a gluey slimy mess. This is primarily what makes them “mucus-forming.” Although digestive fluids break down some elements of this food, it does not get rid of all of it (if it did, bowel constipation would not be a common ailment). Over time the uneliminated slime from these foods build up in the GI tract. This slime turns “acidic” in the body if it is not eliminated quickly. All mucus-forming foods are acid-forming foods if they remain uneliminated.

But, there is a number of what I call “acid-forming stimulants” that do not leave behind slime. I would not consider these to be “mucus-forming,” but toxic because they are too acidic. Also, there is a huge difference between the slime left behind from uneliminated mucus-forming foods and the secretion of lymph fluid. Some foods may cause lymph to secret, but not be explicitly “mucus-forming,” such as limes or any fruit that will cause an encumbered person to have a mouthful of mucus after eating them. In these cases, the astringent properties of the food items are actually pulling on the mucous membrane causing lymph to move, which is a good thing. See this video for more on the this: (“Lymph Secretion is NOT the same as Mucus from Slime-forming Foods — Spira’s Study Session #2” https://youtu.be/SQHDf-vPoJI )

Thus, the question for any food item regardless of what “food list” it is on is does the item degrade into slime? Grapes, apples, lettuce, etc., do not degrade into slime no matter what you do to them. Some vegetables that may be too starchy raw will become mucus-free when cooked properly (see Ehret’s book for details on why this happens). Again, the Mucusless Diet Healing System is not a “food list” based diet, but a sophisticated transitional system that allows you to ease your way toward a cleaner, more mucus-free diet. There is not a “cold-turkey” approach that some mistakenly apply to it if they’ve not read the book.

I highly recommend reading through the Annotated Mucusless Diet Healing System to get a full understanding of the differences between Ehret and Sebi’s perspectives: https://www.mucusfreelife.com/annotated-mucusless-diet-healing-system/. As you will see from the book, it’s not just what you eat, but HOW you eat that can make all the difference while transitioning toward a Mucus-free Diet.

Greeting, I’ve read the mucusless diet about a week ago and fell in love with it. (a little history). I have been a vegetarian for 4 years but a unhealthy one. I couldn’t figure out why I cough a lot and spit up mucus and have constant chest pain when I am not sick with a cold. My doctor told me I have acute bronchospasm. But after the medicine and a year later, I am still suffering from this cough, chest pain and mucus. I did some research and found the Mucusless Diet book and I can not stop talking about the information I read. My friends and family think I am crazy and weird, They I say I need to eat “real food” and feed that junk to my children even though I know what it is doing to our bodies.. I WILL NOT. I am struggling a bit with the transition and my cravings but I am confidant that I can achieve a healthy eating habit. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I listen to your youtube all the time. It keeps me focused and motivated to continue on this new journey the Universe has brought to me. Thank you!! Love peace and Blessings to you Prof. Spira…

The question is: what about sprouted raw seeds and nuts compared to non sprouted, eatwn raw and/or dehydrated incorporated in raw vegan dishes? what Ehret said or would say? 🙂

  9. Mike Browning says:

Thankyou so much, Spira. I found your website using a duckduckgo search for ‘mucus forming food’. Your ‘mucusfreelife’ was the obvious choice.

I am currently in my first bronchitis then laryngitis cold, 15 days running, with my first asthma attack – very scary because it’s all so new. I had my usual meal of oats + sugar-free yoghurt, then another usual meal of fresh fruit + sugar-free yoghurt. With some sugar-free chocolate. I felt utterly exhausted 1 hour after eating both meals. And my bowel motions are unusually loose.

I ask myself “WHY??” Your webpages on mucus foods and mucus free foods give the answer. Like a brilliant flash of insight and sudden understanding.

I am 66 years old, and I realise I can no longer tolerate mucus forming food. In recent years I have had FAR too much yoghurt, cheese, butter, tofu, nut butter and nut milks, sugar free chocolate.

This bronchitis then laryngitis illness with cold intolerance, combined with your website, has shown me what changes I need in my diet.

Best wishes fr Mike B of Queensland.

    • Prof. Spira says:

      Greetings Mike!

Thank you for sharing this, and I am glad the lists gave you that flash of understanding. What you describe lines up with how Ehret read these conditions in the Mucusless Diet Healing System: “A COLD: It is a beneficial effort to eliminate waste from the cavities of the head, the throat, and the bronchial tubes.” A cough, in this paradigm, is not the enemy; it is the body’s effort to clear out what was put in. Yoghurt, cheese, butter, tofu, nut butters and nut milks are all heavy mucus-formers, so you have identified the right suspects. Ehret’s general rule for anyone starting is to transition rather than leap: “only a SLIGHT CHANGE toward an improved diet is advisable.”
